PERSONALITY PROFILES



P. Ramlee was a very talented Malay artist. He is the most versatile entertainer there ever was. P. Ramlee talented was incomparable. No one has ever managed to do brilliant jobs at so many things - acting, directing, writing, composing and singing. He was, in a word, "Extraordinary". As a talented Malay artist, he has done many great works from his profession as an actor, comedian, singer, songwriter, scriptwriter and also film director. All his works are famous until now due to quality of his works. P. Ramlee's real name is Teuku Zakaria Teuku Nyak Puteh. His father's name is Teuku Nyak Puteh Teuku Karim and his mother's name is Che Mah Hussein. His father worked as a sailor from Lhokseumawe. Lhokseumawe is located in the province of Aceh, Indonesia. P. Ramlee borned at his grandmother's house at 40A Counter Hall, Penang, Malaya which later renamed to Jalan P. Ramlee on 30 August 1983.P. Ramlee studied in severals school. That included Kampung Jawa Malay School, Francis Light English School (1939-1941), Japanese Navy School 'Kaigun Gakko during the world War II and the Penang Free School (1945-1947). He was very active in sports especially sepak takraw, badminton and football. in 1948, B.S. Rajhans, a Singaporean director scouting for talents, attended and agricultural show in which P.Ramlee's band just so happened to be invited to perform. Rajhans was instantly taken with the band and Ramlee's mavellous delivery of Azizah. He asked Ramlee and his friend, Sukardi if they would be intereested in a screen test for the Shaw Brother's Malay Film Production.


it is said that the young Ramlee eagerly took up any task during production and was willing to be cast in any role – hero or villain. With his beautiful voice, he later became the first Malay film star not to require a background singer. When did P. Ramlee stat using the letter ‘P’ to his name? It happened apparently when he took part in a singing contest in 1947. The letter stand for ‘PUTEH’, his father’s name and RAMLEE his father younger brother name. The first song he composed was none other than AZIZAH. It was written in 1945 and dedicated to a girl of his fancy by that name. He gave the song its first public airing at an Agricultural Fair in BUKIT MERTAJAM in JUNE 1948. Without much difficulty, news of this great new mvoice reached the ears of BS RAJHANS a well known film dirctor in Singapore. An offer came from Rajhans which was to change the course of P. Ramlee’s destiny. He was invited to Singapore to work at the Jalan Ampas Studios for a Malay film production. Seizing the opportunity, P. Ramlee saw himself moving to the LION CITY, bringing along with him a thousand and one ideas and hope of artistic achievement.

During his lives, P. Ramlee has contribute many masterpiece in the artist's world such as, he already produce about 390 song - as a singer, song writer and composer, 60 films - as an actor, screenwriter and film director, 4 stages plays, 2 radio dramas and 2 television dramas.

P. Ramlee was conferred the "Ahli Mangku Negara (AMN) by the King of Malaysia HM Tuanku Syed Putra Jamalullail on 27 September 1962. In the early 1990s, he was posthumously awarded with the Malaysian honorific title Tan Sri.
P. Ramlee died at the age of 44 due to heart problems in May 29, 1973. He was buried in Jalan Ampang Muslim Cemetary, Kuala Lumpur.
